Birch-trees are rather common in all Sweden. That material has got two advantages that makes it useful in this kind of handicraft. It is resistent against moisture and and dampness. It is also pliable and supple so that it could be bent into various shapes. It was therefore used for roofing in the old farm-houses and as soles in shoes.
Birch-bark may also be woven and used to make baskets and backpacks to be used when picking lingon-berries in the forets.
