I will share my experience
about Wayang Kulit. As a matter of fact, there are
many people who love wayang kulit in Indonesia. The
old and the young, and many little children enjoyed
overnight play, too, even though they soon fall into
sleep included me, when I enjoyed at th first time
first of wayang kulit play.
The word wayang means
shadow, and kulit means
skin in the Indonesian language. Wayang puppets are
made of buffalo's skin, with fine curving and
colorful painting.
When my neighbour's
son circumcisions celebration,
there was a wayang kulit performance. It wa played
overnight, from evening to dawn. The puppet master
called dalang, who narrates old stories from India
such as Ramayana and Mahabrata and manipulate many
wayngs by himself. Gamelan orchestra and a few female
singers accompanies the dalang.
As you know, wayang
kulit in Central Java is probably
one of the oldest continuous traditions of
storytelling in the world, and certainly among the
most highly developed.
And it is well integrated in Javanese society, and it
is considered to be a highlight of Javanese culture.
In Java, wayang kulit
are performed in villages and
towns on public holidays, religious festivals,
weddings, birth celebrations, and circumcisions.
