Our country, Indonesia, has many culture, among them is batik. What is it? It's a craft made from "mori" or unbleached plain cloth. Batik is Javanese culture, but now batik was advanced and become an Indonesian culture. Nowadays, the quantity and variety of batik pattern is wellknown throughout the world.
Yogyakarta( Yogya ) and Surakarta( Solo ) in Central Java are generally regarded as twin capitals ao classical batik, which used only three colours : black, brown, and white to produce delightful and graceful motives on cloth. The decoration manner of batik from Yogya and Solo has simbolic and omen characteristic, with background of Hindu and Kejawen culture. For examples; the dragon motive symbolize water, birds symbolize the out world or wind, and "Modang" or tongue of flame symbolize the heat or flame of fire. Batik from Yogya is famous for its white colour contrasted with brown and black in one pattern. While batik from Solo is refined and characterized by its dark brown colour.
Other places in Java, like Pekalongan, Lasem, and Cirebon are also famous for their typical batik. Batik from Pekalongan is usually colourful and has floral and bird design. Batik from Lasem is characterized by ornamental patterns of animals and flowers, or garlands of flower and leaves, while batik from Cirebon has more fantastic patterns of figures such as animals and chariots, usually in brown and black on a yellowish back ground.
In Java, especially in palace environkent, has a rule to use of batik. There is some batik motives which is forbidden to use for ordinary person. For example, in Yogya and Solo palace environment "Parang barong" motive permitted to use just for king and prince. At the past, infraction for this tradition would get a sanction, 'cause it regarded that he wants to match the king's power. But now, if a person wears it, he will become a laughing stock.
Nowadays, batik also used for women dress, shirt, curtain, wall ornaments, tablecloth, bed sheet, and so on. The production also has an advance. Now, beside production with traditional ways, painting with hand, there is batik production with a modern technic. it's called "batik cap" ( printed batik ). but the most expensive is batik tulis ( handmade batik ). The materials to production batik tulis made from high quality and treated with traditional ways, can be last for a long time.
For smoothness in trading, every handmade batik must be inscribed with "BATIK TULIS" on the side. While printed batik must be inscribed with "BATIK CAP" on the side. With this policies, Minister of industry expect the consumer didn't have any mistakes.
