The project started Sept. 2002. The project is planned to be ended in 2004. This site will continuously be updated.
Project idea (Link to the complete project evaluation)
The project
deals with culture in its various forms in Java and Sweden.
The title
Ndolalak and
Hambo
refers to the names of two dances that may symbolize culture life
in the two countries.
Our students in
Bollnäs,
Madania, and
Purworejo will work with
studies on the main elements of our cultures:
• everyday life and customs (how we
live (how we build houses and plan our towns), what we eat, how young students
think and plan for their future,
how our schools are
organized and work)
•
religious traditions and ceremonies
•
craft (especially wooden
and textile crafts)
•
tourism
(folk-art, folk-music, folk-dancing, interesting places..)
•regional
literature (especially tales and poems
brought from one generation to another by oral tradition).

The
good things: We
have got contact with people from very different cultures. In spite of
technical difficulties we have managed to communicate with each other and the
project is still in progress.
During the Conference in Bogor all the involved teachers had a chance to meet
and make plans for the future work
After the Conference in Bogor, the Swedish teachers went to Purworejo to visit
the partner school there and meet the other teachers and students. This meant
a lot for the rest of the work with the project.
Hopefully our contacts will
not end with the project. We hope to continue the contacts and we hope to be
able to have some kind of student exchange, even if it is expensive.
Problems: The
discontinuity due to the graduating Swedish students. But hopefully the new
students will make a great job.
The Indonesian students in Purworejo have problems with the lack of computers
and e-mail of their own.
The students at Madania school are much younger than the Swedish students.
This made us cancel the planning of a Indonesian visit to Sweden spring 2004
due to the problem to find host families. We hope to make new plans for
exchanges at the Conference in Germany and we hope that the Indonesian
teachers are able to visit
Sweden.
The different holidays for
the students also have been a problem. The Swedish students have long summer
holiday and Christmas holiday and the Indonesian students have Ramadan
holiday.
PS.
The red colour is the Indonesian colour: It is in the
flag and it also symbolizes the warm climate and the warm Indonesian character.
The blue colour is the Swedish colour. It is in the flag and it also symbolizes the cold climate and the more reserved Swedish character.
